back in the new york city public schools, i had a great teacher. mrs. roth would read the newspaper and about martin luther king. he was rising in all of that, and the civil rights movement and she exposed us to lot. but i was just a junkie. the time i was 9 years old, i was handing leaflets out for robert kennedy. when i was 10, i made a big decision and broke with the democratic party and went to work for john lindsay who was running for mayor of new york. i went down to the liberal party headquarters and was handing out leaflets on the street corner in new york. some women thought this was really cute, this little boy and leaflets. and she asked me why. and i made the case and got in early start in my political career. she said this is for you and she hands this box of pastries. i took a back to the liberal headquarters and we opened it up and there were all of these doughnuts and a lot of $10 bills. one of my early lessons in politics -- the district leader grabbed the money and said you can keep the doughnuts. [laughter] >> you and the friend sold

there was a big fight in sadir city in 2008 that i spent a substantial amount of time in. i feel like i saw it in the beginning, during and after the surge. the most recent trip back was over a year ago it was primarily to interview officials in the government that did give me a lot of their time. host: michael gordon has reported in war zones in afghanistan and panama. he was based in moscow for four years. we will go to ron from ohio on the independent line. caller: mr. gordon, do you feel the united states and the west have a misunderstanding of history as far as the tribal conflicts in that region? was there any attempt to point out to the muslim tribes and nations that we did go into bosnia to defend muslims? guest: i think the caller makes a number of interesting points. i am a journalist. i am not an advocate for the american government. there was criticism that the united states somehow oppressed muslims. if you look at the record in the bosnian conflict, the united states led a nato intervention to protect bosnian muslims against serbian aggression. in afghanistan

host: oklahoma city is up next, on our democrats' line. caller: good morning. first of all, about been gauzy. i do not think anyone could have foreseen what happened in benghazi. it was not much different. they were both just using talking points. same thing with john kerry. he was in vietnam. at least he went to the party. guest: i think i disagree with the first part of the statement. i think there were a lot of warnings. there were pretty nasty folks in benghazi that wanted to attack western targets. there was a string of bombings, an attempt on the life of the british ambassador, attacks at the u.s. diplomatic facility / cia base in the weeks and months leading up to the 9/11 anniversary attack. there are a lot of people who were saying the situation is really dangerous, the environment is less safe, and we need more security. ultimately, those requests were not met. host: our guest writes for "newsweek" / "the daily beast." talk about what is happening with "newsweek" and the role that you apply online. guest: "newsweek" just printed its last paper edition
